A Vision Worth Waiting For
Some projects begin long before the first slab is poured. This double-storey custom home — a knock-down and rebuild on a stunning treed site — is one of them.
The owners first came to us just before Covid in 2020 with a clear vision and a well-considered inclusion list. From the very first meeting, it was clear these were people who knew exactly what they wanted. They had a budget in mind, a lifestyle to build around, and a beautiful piece of land in Mitcham's leafy eastern corridor — with a magnificent northerly outlook over a local council park.
Then Covid hit, and like so many projects across the country, proceedings were temporarily put on hold. When we resumed preliminary design works after the restrictions lifted, the excitement picked up right where it had left off — and the wait had only sharpened the owners' clarity around what they were after.
Mitcham is one of Melbourne's most sought-after established suburbs — a quiet, family-friendly pocket of the eastern corridor where mature trees and generous blocks make for some of the city's most liveable streets. It was the perfect canvas for a home designed to sit within its surroundings, not against them.
Designing Around the View
The site's standout feature was always its outlook — a lush, green canvas of parkland stretching to the north. The owners were determined to make the most of it, and so the design challenge became beautifully simple: how do you open a home up to a view like that without compromising on comfort, privacy, or functionality?
Our answer was a thoughtfully planned double-storey home of 26 squares. The open-plan living, kitchen, meals and alfresco areas were positioned to draw the eye directly toward the park, with generous glazing and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow that makes every meal feel like an occasion.
Beyond the main living spaces, the home includes a formal lounge, dining area, a dedicated study, four bedrooms, and a large living room — a complete family home with room to grow.
Finishes That Make a Statement
The exterior sets a confident tone from the street. Veneer works feature a striking combination of vertical metal decking, James Hardie vertical board cladding, and masonry blockwork — a modern yet grounded palette that sits beautifully within the natural setting. Merbau decking was selected for both the upper and lower outdoor areas, adding warmth and a sense of craftsmanship that only improves with age.
Inside, every room reflects the owners' high standards and attention to detail:
- Master Bedroom — his and hers walk-in robes with a large, well-appointed ensuite,
- Wet Areas & Living Areas — feature floor and wall tiling throughout,
- Bedrooms — feature carpets for comfort and warmth,
- Lighting — LED downlights throughout the home,
- Kitchen — soft-closing drawers and doors, vinyl wrap cabinetry, and featured stone bench tops,
- Joinery — feature high gloss woodwork carried throughout the home,
- Showers — feature tiled bases for a refined, finished look.
A Long Time Coming — Worth Every Moment
From the first conversation to the final handover, this project is a testament to what's possible when a client knows what they want and a builder takes the time to listen. The result is a home that honours its setting, reflects its owners' personality, and is built to stand for generations.
At Australian Heritage Homes, this is what we love most — not just building homes, but bringing long-held visions to life.
