Designing a Home Library

Designing a Home LibraryAh, the library. A bit of a lost art, if you ask us. Gone are the days when we could hide away in expansive wooden rooms, leafing through hard bound, first-editions of all of the classics in literature. These days you’re more likely to find ipad rooms, full of the latest technology. Or perhaps books that read themselves to you and act themselves out in the process. We’re heading into a technology driven future, and that’s wonderful in many capacities. But part of our passion about architecture, and building dream homes for our customer base, is bringing your vision to life. We love to create spaces for you and your loved ones to build memories and to while away your time, exactly as you please.

The library is a perfect example of one such hobby room. A library can be small, cozy and snug- or it can be large and minimalistic. It doesn’t need to depend on the changing times of architectural trends, we can bring to life anything that you’re looking for. As long as you are happy in the space that we’ve built, then it’s a job well done.

It’s not always necessary for you to reach out to the Australian Heritage Homes team. Collaborating in thought process, or even just sharing inspiration on our site are both as important to us as doing the actual building. So whether you’re building from scratch, or trying to go it the DIY route, here are some things to keep in mind if you’re looking to add a library to your home:

First of all, you’ll need to land on a personal style. Is there a wood that speaks to you the most? Is there a color that you’re looking to highlight? These are the kinds of questions to keep in mind. There are also a few different options when it comes to the star of the show- the place where your books will be held. Do you go for freestanding bookshelves, or do you want to build them directly into the walls? There are benefits to both. Freestanding can be moved more easily and will take less time. Options built into the wall will have a more permanent look, and you won’t have to worry about any maintenance. Feeling especially modern? Floating free-standing shelves will give the most minimalistic look possible.

Next up, you’ll need to pick the most ideal room. We recommend an area of the home that receives plenty of natural lighting, which is relaxing and pleasant to read and relax with. We also recommend a quieter area of your home. You don’t really want to be listening to the hustle and bustle of the kitchen when you’re trying to devour your latest literary obsession, now do you?

Finally you have some organization ahead of you. How will you organize your books so that they’re easy to find. We recommend either by color or alphabetically by title. Either way, your brain will know to quickly find the tome that you’ve been wanting to read.

Questions? Give us a shout. We’re always happy to talk through what your dream space will look like.
